Thailand Warns of Rising Flu and RSV Cases, Especially Among Children

Thailand's Public Health Ministry has issued a warning as influenza and RSV cases surge during the rainy season, with over 30,000 new flu cases reported in just one week. Children are particularly vulnerable, with influenza most common in ages 5-9 and RSV hitting children under 4 hardest. The total influenza cases since January have exceeded 555,000, resulting in 59 fatalities. Health officials emphasize that both viruses spread easily in schools and crowded settings, with RSV causing more severe respiratory symptoms in young children. The department recommends mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and keeping sick children home to control outbreaks.

Heavy Rains Cause Widespread Flooding in Central Thailand

Satellite images from GISTDA show that 1.67 million rai of land across 14 provinces in lower North and Central Thailand are flooded after several days of heavy rain. Most affected areas are farmlands, communities along riverbanks, and roads. The flooded provinces include Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and others. The Pasak Jolasid Dam will increase water release starting Wednesday, which may lead to higher river levels and possible flooding in Saraburi, Lop Buri, and Ayutthaya. Bangkok Red and Purple Metro Lines to End 20-Baht Fare Cap

Starting October 1, Bangkok’s Red and Purple metro lines will return to their regular fare rates as the 20-baht fare cap policy comes to an end with a change in government. The special fare cap, which began in October 2023, will no longer be in effect, and fares will range from 12 to 42 baht on the Red Line and 14 to 42 baht on the Purple Line, with some discounts for students, children, and the elderly. Monthly passes and discount programs will be brought back to help commuters manage costs. The decision comes after the policy, which benefited over 100,000 commuters, was not continued by the new administration. Some leaders and parties are urging the government to keep the fare cap, citing increased ridership and revenue, but related laws have not yet been approved to support its extension.
